Adorable replica of "William the Faience Hippopotamus”. Ceramic, glazed hippo, hand painted with ancient Egypt Nile lotus flower and bird designs. This statue is perfect for any lover of Egyptian artwork or hippo collectors lol.
"William" is known for its striking blue color. In Ancient Egypt, the faience hippos were linked to the themes of life, regeneration, and rebirth. When placed in tombs, they were meant to supply the deceased with regenerative power and to guarantee his or her rebirth. This statuette is modeled to look like the ancient Egyptian statue that is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1917, The Met acquired a small ancient Egyptian faience hippo found in a tomb chapel in Meir, Egypt. The small, blue hippo quickly charmed viewers and it received the now-famous nickname, William, in 1931. Today he is the informal mascot of the Museum, beloved by museum goers around the world.
This William has one tiny speck of blue missing on the back. Please see pics.
