Vintage Grace S. Putnam Composition Doll (1930s40s)

This vintage doll is marked Copyright by Grace S. Putnam on the back of the neck. Grace Putnam was the sculptor of the famous Bye-Lo Baby (introduced in 1923). This example dates to the mid-1930s to early 1940s and represents a rarer dark-skinned composition character doll variant.

Details:

Head, hands, and shoes: composition with painted features

Body: cloth torso and limbs

Mark: Copyright by Grace S. Putnam on back of neck

Age: Circa 19351945

Condition:

Expected age wear for a 1930s40s composition doll

Small paint rubs and chips, especially on the shoes (see photos)

Back of the head shows some white areas some gently surface-cleaned, others left untouched for originality

Red paint above the shoes appears to have been added later as a touch-up, not original to the doll

Feet are attached with modern plastic ties (zip-tie style) sturdy for display but not original construction
